I’m most internet famous for being an emcee at the annual CCC Conference in Hamburg.


This is a version of the Proust Questionnaire, one used by a magazine that usually catches my eye at subway newstands.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Seeing the Earth from orbit, on a vehicle designed by hackers.  On Earth, I’d say perfect happiness happiness is a beautiful, sober moment at Burning Man.

What is your greatest fear?

The breakdown of civilization, which I believe is well underway in many different ways.

Robert McNamara

Which living person do you most admire?

Pope Francis

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?


What is the trait you most deplore in others?

Superiority, or the pursuit thereof.

What is your greatest extravagance?

My suits.

What is your favorite journey?

The one that will take me into orbit, or beyond.  Barring that, a flight to Berlin.

What do you consider the most overrated virtue?

For those that consider them virtues, the related constructs of patriotism and nationalism.

On what occasion do you lie?

I lie when it will protect your feelings.

What do you dislike most about your appearance?

My hair, or lack thereof.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

Ask the Germans.

What is your greatest regret?

Taking too long to figure out what to do with my life and who to spend it with…though I wish I didn’t have any regrets.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?


When and where were you happiest?

Church and Market, San Francisco, sometime in the Fall of 2001.

Which talent would you most like to have?

Probably sight reading music on the piano.

What is your current state of mind?

Pensive and aggravated.  I’ve been trying to re-do my website so it’s not a complete disgrace.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

My level of fitness.  I’m not where I’d like to be.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Having some small thing to do with the Hackerspaces Movement.

If you could choose what to come back as, what would it be?

The MoMA.

What is your most treasured possession?

The knowledge that no single object means that much to me.

What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?

Probably being dumped right before heading out on a trip to Japan.  That being said, Japan is a great place for a Westerner to be depressed.

Where would you like to live?

New York, where I live now.  If Berlin had a Harlem, a PS1 and a Gemäldegalerie sized Modern & Contemporary museum, I’d be equally thrilled to live there.

What is your favorite occupation?

Helping the underdog.  Getting paid for it is nice as well.

What do you most value in your friends?

Invitations to unique experiences and gatherings of friends I haven’t made yet.

Who is your favorite hero of fiction?

Guy Noir.

Who are your heroes in real life?

I try not to have heroes.  Everyone I’ve ever thought of as a hero has disappointed me.  Even heroes have human faults, how often we forget that.

What are your favorite names?

Alexander, Alicia and Keenan Michael Key.  I have to admit, Nick Farr is pretty cool too.

What is it that you most dislike?

Few things make me more livid than being disrespectful towards those in service positions.

How would you like to die?

I’d prefer to bury everyone I know, keeling over at my last friend’s funeral.

What is your motto?

There is always a way.
